Newcastle City Tour

An excellent collection of understated courses, but all within 20 minutes of the vibrant centre of Newcastle.

GTE new logoWhitley Bay Golf Club is situated at the North East Corner of the ever popular seaside resort and town of Whitley Bay. The course is surrounded to the North and West by rolling fields with views to the east of the coast and Whitley Bay Lighthouse and visitor centre. The course is widely regarded as one of the finest and often challenging courses of the North East Area due to its undulating fairways with a dene running through that requires a good drive and carry to successfully negotiate it on several of the holes.

The pleasant Clubhouse with welcoming staff and good food ensures visitors will have an enjoyable visit. The area is known for its long sandy beaches with good roads and public transport to the Historic and cultural City of Newcastle Upon Tyne, nine miles west of Whitley Bay.

The town of Whitley Bay has abundant hotels, vibrant nightlife and visitor attractions, from a newly re-vamped theatre to the Lighthouse and visitor centre with the pretty villages of Cullercoats and Tynemouth situated on the coast nearby. A local sea life centre and the Metro Centre, one of Europe’s premier shopping centre, is 30 minutes drive away.

The Northumberland Golf Club is privileged to have a great golf course with modern clubhouse facilities that combine the best of tradition with a firm eye on the future.  To visitors: I doubt you will find a more enjoyable example of a heath land course in the North of England.

The challenge of playing on medieval rigs and furrows, avoiding the numerous well placed bunkers and reading the large undulating greens are a challenge to the very best players.  Couple this with the fact that you are playing over and beside the Racecourse make the whole experience memorable.

This is not one of those forgettable courses where you struggle to distinguish one hole from another.  Nor is it an unrelenting slog - tactical golf is required, typical of the designers, H.S. Colt and James Braid and worthy of its position as a Regional Open Qualifying course from 2013.
A word of caution - do not relax on the "final stretch", the closing 4 holes into the prevailing westerly are a real challenge and will require all your skill and concentration.

Ponteland Golf Club is located in the village of Ponteland approximately 10 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne. Established in 1927, this picturesque parkland course offers easy walking as well as a fair and memorable challenge to players of all abilities. Ponteland was chosen to host the 2014 Northumberland County Championship in June last year, and has been chosen to host the NE/NW PGA Northumberland and Durham Open in 2015 with the best professionals in the area taking part.

Ponteland has built quite a reputation for the quality of the course. It is kept in magnificent condition by our green staff and the greens are renowned for both their slickness and trueness. Visitors of Ponteland Golf Club are assured of a friendly welcome and a pleasant experience. Ponteland was one of the first Clubs in Northumberland to be awarded the GolfMark award. With juniors being the future of the sport we demonstrate a clear commitment to the development of Juniors and Junior golfers. Be sure that staff at Ponteland will guarantee the warmest of welcomes to members and guests alike.
